Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow flagged off participants of the George Town City Walk at 7.30am from City Hall as they marched passed landmarks like Fort Cornwallis, Khoo Kongsi, St George's Church, Goddess of Mercy temple, Masjid Kapitan Keling, Little India and many more of the heritage area's iconic streets.
Chow expressed joy at seeing over 5,000 participants gathering to commemorate George Town's City Day, which marks the day the city was inscribed into Unesco's World Heritage Sites list in 2008. "Last year, we had to restrict it to only 1,000 participants, as set by the National Security Council then to prevent Covid-19 infections," he said.
Before the walk began at 7.30am, participants gathered before 6am to join the pre-dawn group warm-up session to the tune of upbeat music.
