The Outdoor Retailer trade show is back in Salt Lake City this week after a four-year run in Denver
but the massive expo will be without three industry giants who are boycotting the show: Patagonia, REI, and The North Face. The companies are boycotting based on the same concerns that forced the show to leave Utah in 2018 after decades in the state: That Utah doesn't deserve to reap the economic benefits from the show because of Republican politicians' opposition to conservation efforts to protect national monuments and public lands.
The debate over the location of the show, which can generate millions of dollars for the local economy where it's held, centers around land management in southern Utah, particularly over the boundaries of two national monuments, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. Many brands with histories of environmental advocacy believe Utah is a bad choice because state officials oppose protecting some lands that the industry cherishes.
