Indigenous residents in the Kimberley region of WA, including some who never received a birth certificate, are being empowered with recognised identification.

abc.net.au/news/wa-indigenous-residents-birth-certificates-new-id/102576814Residents in WA's remote Kimberley are turning to a community-produced and government-backed ID card to overcome challenges accessing recognised identification.

"This will be a community-owned ID that will be signed by the CEOs ... it really gives autonomy to the communities to be able to verify their own residents," Ms Johnson said., Ms Johnson said the primary purpose of the card was to verify people for their financial services and was not a replacement of traditional identification.

Mr McIvor said if all the banks approved the community ID cards, it would save residents having to travel a great distance to fill out paperwork and confirm birth dates. Mr McIvor said being able to sign off on the cards as chief executive would be especially beneficial to the elderly and teenagers who were about to enter the workforce.

Mr Houghton said the Indigenous Australians Minister also ramped up her “divisive attacks” on ‘No’ Voters. “When a politician talks like that, and disparages Australians for not agreeing with them, it tells me one thing. They are panicking,” he said. “Burney had an opportunity to bring Australians together and instead with this inflammatory rhetoric, she divided us once again into tribal, political camps.”
