Our recommendation in the Republican primary for Texas Senate District 10 | Opinion
While both candidates agree on many conservative issues, King’s substantial legislative experience gives him our nod over Norred, an engineer and attorney from Arlington. Norred opposed government pandemic regulations and represented hairstylist Shelley Luther, who was jailed for opening her Far North Dallas salon in violation of an emergency order.
Norred, 58, favors reducing property tax burdens and eliminating unnecessary regulations on businesses. He favors giving school districts greater autonomy from the state to “use their own judgment” regarding high-stakes testing, a position that gives us some pause. The Senate District 10 seat is held by Beverly Powell, a Burleson Democrat who flipped the seat from Republican in 2018 and is challenging the validity of the new district lines that split Black and Hispanic voters in Tarrant County.
In many ways, the new district lines reveal the flaws of redistricting methods that allow politicians to pick their voters. Callahan County, for example, is roughly 145 miles from Tarrant County, and voters in most of the counties in the new District 10 will be voting for a candidate from the more urban and distant parts of the district.
