Public Safety Canada has confirmed the federal government no longer intends to launch a P.E.I. pilot of the gun buy-back program before other provinces.

on Dec. 29, 2022, states that Phase 1 of the buy-back program would begin last month and would be led by the RCMP.

“We are taking significant step towards building safer communities with a comprehensive strategy to get deadly firearms off our street, including the assault-style firearms buyback," Champoux said in an emailed statement. "However, discussions were paused in the fall during federal, provincial and territorial discussions. At this time, the Province is still awaiting further details from the federal government on how their buy-back program may be implemented," Vicki Tse, senior communications officer for P.E.I.'s Department of Justice and Public Safety, wrote in a Jan. 11 email.

SaltWire Network contacted the chiefs of police for Kensington and Summerside. Neither were aware of plans for local law enforcement to implement a gun buy-back program in the immediate future. In May 2020, the federal government announced a ban on the use or sale of more than 1,500 firearms deemed to be “assault-style weapons.” An amnesty period of this ban will expire on Oct. 30, 2023.
