Written by Oceanside native Heather Megill, the family-friendly musical honors the 1820 Washington Irving story but expands the roles of its female lead
This month in San Diego County, there are at least seven horror-themed plays, comedies and musicals on local stages. Some were written for grown-ups and some for family audiences. Then there's Oceanside Theatre Company's 'Welcome to Sleepy Hollow,' which opened Saturday , that covers all the options. It's an entertaining original musical with some dark elements featuring both adult actors and children from OTC's youth ensemble program.
Megill's musical score is varied in style and tempo. Some of the songs that stand out are 'Ichabod,' 'Waltz, 'Almost a Man' and 'This Could Be Love.' In the original Irving tale, the character of Katrina — the young woman in Sleepy Hollow who schoolmaster Ichabod Crane and prankster Brom Bones covet as a future bride — has only a small part. But in Megill's musical, Katrina is a central character with her own ideas and dreams.
