The village’s Historic Preservation Commission, at the request of the village’s administration, was asked to develop an honorary street name program addressing regulations and criteria for naming streets in honor of individuals who have made a “significant contribution” to the village, state, nation or world, village officials said.

Oswego Village Board members recently approved a new policy for honorary street names in the village. “We started this program a few years ago but there really was never a policy for it. It seemed fitting to wrap a policy around it,” Oswego Village Administrator Dan Di Santo said. The honorary street name signs will not change the official street names or addresses, village officials said.

Some of the criteria for an individual to receive an honorary street name in Oswego under the policy include significant accomplishments in the military and government; science and technology; mathematics, business and commerce; community service; arts and entertainment; education and humanities; sports and recreation; social and humanitarian; medicine and health; and philanthropy.
