Barbie has its sights set on the 2024 Oscars as Warner Bros. will submit the script in original screenplay and Ryan Gosling in supporting.
Variety previously speculated that Barbie would be campaigning for original screenplay instead of adapted screenplay at the Oscars. Barbie is based on the dolls by Mattel, so it could be argued that it’s adapted material. However, Barbie is a unique and authentic idea from Gerwig and Baumbach, so campaigning in the original screenplay category feels right. The Academy will decide on Barbie’s screenplay designation by January 11, 2024, when nomination ballots open for voting.
Additionally, Warner Bros. is expected to run campaigns for Barbie in Best Picture, Best Director for Gerwig, Best Actress for , Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, Best Original Song, and multiple below-the-line categories.
