Back in the MLB postseason for the first time since 2016, the young Orioles drop Game 1 against the Rangers but look far from overwhelmed.
The Orioles brought postseason baseball back to Camden Yards for the first time since 2014 but ended up with a loss in Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Rangers. BALTIMORE — This — a rookie still hanging his head at his locker 30 minutes after the final out, a veteran player insisting his team cannot think about anything other than tomorrow, a manager answering questions about why a pitcher came out when — is what the Baltimore Orioles had been waiting for.
Because this — a game that could have changed on a swing not taken against Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning, on signals not crossed in the ninth or on any one of several other small moments or decisions — is postseason baseball. And it does not make way for pomp and circumstance.“That was a special environment for our guys to play in,” Orioles Manager Brandon Hyde said. “We just got beat.”
“This is what you look forward to throughout the whole year. The crowd was electric,” Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson said. “Facing different pitchers every time, that can be tough, but that’s just playoff baseball. You have to stay locked in.” But after he started Anthony Santander with a 99-mph fastball down the middle, Santander tried to jump on a similar pitch down in the strike zone and grounded into a 5-4-3 double play. Chapman, who did not look able to escape the inning on his own, did so because of it, getting Ryan Mountcastle to strike out swinging. But that moment was hardly representative of Santander’s day, hardly an indication of a playoff rookie overwhelmed by the situation.
