Director Matt Reeves recalls how the grim ending for Cloverfield sparked some internal studio debates. '...it also was very human. We both loved that.'
Matt Reeves, director of Cloverfield, says there were debates over the monster film's dark ending. Directed by Reeves and produced by J.J. Abrams, Cloverfield is a 2008 found-footage horror film, that follows six New Yorkers as they try to survive an attack on the city from a massive monster. The film is credited as being one of the best examples of the found-footage horror style, and was a massive box-office success, earning $172 million worldwide against a $25 million budget.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with SlashFilm, Reeves says that there were studio debates about how Cloverfield should end, and whether or not it was too dark. The original film's director says that the ending of seeing Rob and Beth dying together, followed by footage of their date, is "tragic," but "it also was very human.
Gosh, you know, we absolutely did have some debates about it. I remember that, especially for Drew [Goddard] and I, we felt that the most hopeful ending was that ending. Because the point was, for that last moment, if that's their last moment — and there's ambiguity, but it doesn't seem good — the fact that they are with each other, and they love each other, it's sort of a beautiful, transcendent idea.
Reeves says that finding the balance between hope and a grim fate for the film's final scenes was a tricky one, but the back-to-back scenes of Rob and Beth's deaths and their Coney Island date manage to do this perfectly.
What We Know About Cloverfield's Future Though the most recent film in the series, The Cloverfield Paradox, had largely negative reviews, the franchise is still continuing on strong. A long-awaited sequel to the original film, Cloverfield 2, is set to be directed by Babak Anvari, and will be written by Joe Barton. While it's been confirmed this will be a direct sequel to Cloverfield, the details are currently under tight wraps.
