Stay-at-home orders limiting Americans' movement have dramatically reduced the incidence of fatal accidents, which has curtailed the supply of much-needed donor organs.
From March 8 to April 11, the number of organ donors who died in traffic collisions was down 23%compared with the same period last year, while the number of donors resulting from all other types of accidents was down 21%.
Strokes and heart attacks are the second and third most common sources of donations, accounting for 27% and 20% of organs, respectively, but when people die from a stroke or heart attack at home instead of a hospital, their organs cannot be used for transplant because of lost blood flow. To prepare to treat a surge of Covid-19 patients, most hospitals canceled non-critical procedures, including virtually all organ transplants from living donors."When you have a health care crisis like this, you have to change gears very quickly and conserve resources," said, M.D., chief of abdominal transplantation at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center."We decided we would not take organs from areas of the country that had high incidences of Covid.
