Optus boss Kelly Bayer Rosmarin says she feels “terrible” that the personal information of millions of Optus customers stretching back to 2017 has been compromised by the data breach.
has relayed her anger and disappointment that the telco suffered one of the biggest data breaches in Australian history, with the culprit unclear beyond the European IP addresses that facilitated the hack.
Appearing on the verge of tears during a video conference on Friday morning, Ms Bayer Rosmarin said she felt “terrible”. Asked whether she was aware of screenshots being circulated of hackers looking to sell the names, numbers and email addresses of Optus customers as recently as last week, Ms Bayer Rosmarin said Optus was still working to validate if that information was relevant or a result of this data breach.
“The timing is certainly interesting. And if the stolen data really is being auctioned off on a forum, that could perhaps indicate that the hack was financially motivated rather than politically motivated,” Mr Callow said.
