Thousands of Optus customers who were victims of a cyberattack may never find out how the breach happened after the telecommunications group pleaded “legal professional privilege” to stop a report into the hack being released.

Andrew Williams, chief executive of the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network , a peak body representing consumers, said once legal matters had been sorted out, Optus had “an obligation to be upfront” with customers about “what went wrong, why it went wrong and what they’ve done to address it”.Optus was the most distrusted brand in Australia in the 12 months to June, according to research from Roy Morgan, edging out Facebook/Meta, Telstra and News Corp for the worst ranking.

The investigations are being co-ordinated, and while it is not yet clear whether each body will release a separate or joint report, both organisations have confirmed their findings will be made public.
