Violent crime up in 2022, says Ottawa Police Service annual report, to be tabled Monday
Police Chief Eric Stubbs, who joined the Ottawa police last November, said the OPS had worked to address issues raised during the Public Order Emergency Commission’s hearing as well as recommendations from Ottawa’s auditor general and citizen groups.
The convoy protest sparked an increase in the number of public complaints about police. The Office of the Independent Police Review Director received 866 complaints about OPS in 2022 compared to 350 in 2021. Of those 516 additional complaints, 410 were attributed to the protest and 390 of these were “screened out” by OPIRD. More than half of the complaints screened out were laid by complainants who were not directly affected by the incident or interaction with police.
• Ottawa police’s guns and gangs unit seized a record 107 guns linked to crime in 2022 compared to 80 in 2021. Police say there is a continued influx of illegal firearms into Ottawa, with 80 per cent coming from the United States. • Non-violent crimes, which involve unlawful acts, but do not involve violence, such as arson, break and enter, theft, mischief and fraud, increased by 22 per cent.
