One eagle-eyed viewer has spotted a mistake in Oppenheimer, pointing out that one aspect of the production is not accurate for the time period.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Oppenheimer's historical accuracy score takes a small ding, with one viewer pointing out a subtle mistake during a significant scene in the film. Directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is based on the book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, chronicling the life and career of American theoretical physicist and "father of the atomic bomb" J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Now, following the Oppenheimer release release, Twitter user Andy Craig points out that the film features a subtle mistake involving the American flag. Check out the tweet below: The scene in question takes place in 1945, with Craig noticing that the extras in the scene are holding flags that have 50 stars on them. The American flag, of course, had only 48 stars in 1945, with the additional two being added in 1960. Curiously, however, other 1940s-set scenes in the film feature the correct, 48-star version of the flag.
Oppenheimer's Mistake Is Subtle – But Still Surprising It's very likely that the vast majority of audiences won't notice the flag mistake in Oppenheimer while watching the film. The scene in which they are featured, after all, is really about Oppenheimer's state of mind and him coming to terms with the power that he has brought into the world. The attention throughout is firmly on Murphy's character with the flags only adding flavor to the scene.
Despite the mistake not really hampering the film-going experience for most viewers, it's still surprising to see. Oppenheimer, from beginning to end, is meticulously crafted, featuring period-accurate costumes, props, and set dressing. Nolan puts a big emphasis on authentically recreating aspects of the setting, including the entire town of Los Alamos in New Mexico and the first atomic bomb itself, right down the tape and snaking wires across its metal hull.
