Board member says her colleagues ‘have completely breached their fiduciary obligations over the last three years’
When it comes to finding a solution to the operating crisis facing California’s transit systems, there is only one plan coming from transit leaders and their political advocates.The words “reform” and “accountability” are rarely spoken when addressing transit agency operating deficits, especially from BART, which currently is running deficits of over $300 million a year.
It was to be expected, given that my colleagues on the BART board have completely breached their fiduciary obligations over the last three years. My efforts to convince them to hold the line on spending were routinely met with name calling and bullying. All labor contracts should then be put on the table for renegotiation of work rules and benefit levels. This could have been done in 2020 under emergency provisions or in 2021 when the contracts were renewed, or in 2022 when the contracts were reopened and 10.5% raises were handed out. The BART board took a hard pass on demanding any meaningful concessions from labor in all three of those instances.
