Women have made tremendous strides closing the gender gap in many areas of life. One of them isn’t worth celebrating: alcohol consumption.
Pop culture set the table for the current crisis. Smart brand marketers realized women comprised a valuable consumer audience for their products. They depicted women happily coping with modern life thanks to their favorite cocktails. Entertainment producers leaned in on this fiction in wildly popular shows like “Sex and the City.” Drinking alcohol is often portrayed as a celebrated, “fun” form of stress relief.
