Last fall, the University of San Diego’s Violence, Inequality and Power Lab and the USD-San Diego Community College District Institute for Civil Civic Engagement conducted a research study to assess the frequency and intensity of threats and harassment directed toward local elected officials across San Diego County. That includes mayors, members of school boards, community college boards, city councils and the Board of Supervisors.
If conversations between the public and their elected representatives are increasingly co-opted by actors looking to disrupt and paralyze the political process, meaningful civil dialogue is undermined and faith in local government could falter.
