Patrick Henry High School Principal Michelle Irwin’s unilateral decisions from 2020 to this year to eliminate eightfor ninth-, 10th- and 11th-graders have emerged in recent weeks as one of the biggest academic controversies to embroil the San Diego Unified School District in some time. Students and parents alike complained that dropping courses in Advanced World History, Honors U.S.

Irwin told a reporter her decision was rooted in respect for the school’s “partners in education ... our parents and our students.” Where was that respect when she made big decisions on her own in 2020 and 2021? This olive branch won’t obscure the trust gap she created. That requires commitment over time.
