In 1974 I finally realized my dream and became a deputy sheriff and soon after a San Diego police officer.
is retired after 45 years of service with local law enforcement agencies, including the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. He lives in San Diego County.
A few months before graduating from high school I met with my counselor to seek advice about my future education and career at which point I expressed interest in becoming a police officer based on my positive contact with San Diego Police Department Officer George Varela, but my counselor strongly discouraged me.
I experienced very difficult challenges and at one point filed a federal lawsuit for discrimination against the San Diego Police Department, but I remained strong and finally was successful in 1977 by helping create better opportunities for women and minorities in local law enforcement.
