A Saskatoon community activist says democratic principles were trampled by city council\u0027s decision to rename John A. Macdonald Road.

Those critical of the process feared being labelled racist at the drop of the hat.

It is based on a simplistic and cartoonish view of Canadian history, in which they throw the baby out with the bathwater, and invite the rest of us to join in. We would, instead, be a powerless sub-state of the United States, which had proclaimed the taking of Canada to be part of its “manifest destiny” to rule the whole continent. There were already U.S. invasions of the Canadian territory in 1775 and 1812 and more decisive plans in the works.

As Americans, we would also have been party to the countless illegal wars, occupations, “regime change” projects, coup d’etats that the U.S. has undertaken after its founding in 1776, and continues to do today.
