Continuing to delay immigation reform is not only a failure to protect the vulnerable...

Diana Cinco, 18, during a press conference at St Paul's United Methodist Church urging the House of Representatives to pass comprehensive immigration reform, Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, in Houston. Individuals from The Metropolitan Organization and members of an Interfaith coalition of Houston area religious leaders urged congress to keep families together, protect workers and “Dreamers” like Cinco and provide a workable path to citizenship.

But migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who arrive in the U.S. are not political pawns or bargaining chips to be used by policymakers. They are real people with families, hopes and aspirations; many of them are fleeing violence or oppressive regimes. The situation highlights the urgency of real solutions to ensure security and order at our borders.

Given the news cycle and the rhetoric of some politicians who claim to represent evangelicals, it is a common assumption that evangelicals are hostile to immigrants. But asshows, this obscures the truth — many Texas evangelicals want both security and compassion. Throughout the Bible, Christians are called upon to love and welcome the sojourner and the foreigner. Although it is important that we uphold the rule of law, we also have a biblical obligation as Christians to advocate for the inherent dignity of immigrants and other vulnerable groups who seek a better life in the U.S. Our state is at the heart of that effort, as many Texas evangelicals are either themselves immigrants or live and worship alongside them.

Evangelicals are defined by their commitment to the Bible, which has a great deal to say on immigration — and most Texas evangelicals realize that.
