Opinion: Addressing gun violence in San Diego as homicides and shootings increase [Opinion]

The solutions for ending the slaughter come from multiple sources. Both the city and county of San Diego have passed ordinances that require the safe storage of firearms, and that prohibit the distribution or possession of non-serialized ghost guns and the parts used to make them.

How do governments determine which solutions will work best to address this violence? How are impacted communities given a voice to help craft the most effective solutions? How do local governments provide the much-needed funding to these community-based organizations? And how are those working in these organizations given the support to handle the trauma they face in doing this work?

However, we are experts on the right to self-defense. Despite the spike in violence in our country, we do know that a firearm is the most effective self-defense tool ever invented. If you ask San Diego Police Chief Nisleit, I’m confident he will tell you that the spike isn’t caused by San Diego County Gun Owners members or concealed carry permit holders. The majority of violent criminals are career criminals.

Almost all cities across the U.S. have seen recent spikes in homicides and non-fatal shootings. We have also seen record numbers of gun sales and ammunition since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. Financial stress, the pandemic, lack of access to quality education, food insecurity, housing instability, racial injustice and police brutality are all precursors to violence.

We know where the solutions lie to solving violence in our communities — within our communities. Many of our neighborhoods have experienced underinvestment over decades. Our support systems for families and children are lacking. Many folks have lost or been unable to maintain jobs due to quarantines, even during in-person school. Some struggle to feed their families, and to pay for gas and rising utility bills.
