Opinion: 2023 must be the year San Diego actually reduces homelessness [Opinion]

that the county had 8,427 homeless people — 57 percent in the city of San Diego — up 10 percent from 2020’s estimate.This spike came after a Democratic majority took over the county Board of Supervisors in January 2021, brought more compassion to a county government long dominated by Republicans, beefed up public health programs, vowed to reduce homelessness, and declared homelessness and fentanyl public health crises.
This is not meant to say elected leaders should focus less or give up on addressing a complex issue with so many dimensions, including housing availability and costs, public health, addiction, mental illness and poverty. It is to say that there should be a sober evaluation of the causes, a better balancing of love and toughness and a realization that many homeless people don’t want the help being offered.
