KOTA KINABALU: Airlines have agreed to waive cancellation fees while the Immigration Department will allow a special extension of one week to China nationals stranded in the state following the novel coronavirus outbreak, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew.

She said the state Immigration Department had agreed to assist with visa extensions of seven days after the expiry date, but this could only be done at the state Immigration head office in Kota Kinabalu.

"Visas will be extended upon them showing valid return tickets. It has also been decided to waive the local guarantor requirement for FIT tourists. Liew said special meetings had been held on Monday with the relevant authorities including the Sabah Immigration Department, Malaysia Airports Bhd and airlines such as Malaysia Airlines Bhd, AirAsia, Malindo Air, Xiamen Airlines, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern/Shanghai airlines to discuss the repatriation of Chinese tourists stranded in Sabah after the state banned Chinese nationals from entering directly from China from Jan 30.

On the assistance offered by the airlines, Liew, who is also Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, said the airlines agreed to waive cancellation fees for those whose flights were cancelled.“We advise stranded passengers to access the respective airlines' websites for further information on available flights for their return journey," she added.
