The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are heroes, yet they did the exact same thing Shredder did in the 1990 live-action movie, proving their hypocrisy.
There are few live-action adaptations of comic books more well done, beloved, and iconic as the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie of the 1990s, though in the current state of TMNT canon, it actually created a bit of controversy, as one TMNT twist exposes their hypocrisy, which stemmed from that very film.
The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie came out after the proven success of the franchise with the TMNT animated series . While the movie took a lot of inspiration from the cartoon–from the Turtles’ individual masks being different colors to their unique and more ‘teen-like’ personalities–the tone of the film was decidedly dark, which is actually why it was such a good comic book movie.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The TMNT Brought Children into the Foot Clan In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #84 by Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, Tom Waltz, and Dave Wachter, the Ninja Turtles are facing off against the sinister deity, the Rat King. In this comic, the Rat King has brainwashed an orphanage full of children into following him to a dilapidated bridge, where he is hanging them one-by-one over the edge, and then dropping them into the water.
When looking at this without the proper context, it seems as though the Ninja Turtles are no better than Shredder was in the TMNT live-action movie, but it’s actually not that simple. At this point, the Foot Clan is being led by the Ninja Turtles’ father, Master Splinter, and while they don’t necessarily approve of his current journey with the Foot Clan, they do still love and trust him.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are well aware of the ruthless leader Splinter has become since taking over as the head of the Foot Clan, yet they still bring him a new crop of minds to mold in his image. Not only that, but all they need to do is look in the mirror to see what a terrible father Splinter is. The mutant rat trained them to be ninjas from birth without even giving them the option to live their lives how they wanted.
