And Hernandez won them both — Saturday’s Grade I Clement L. Hirsch Stakes aboard Adare Manor and Sunday’s Grade III La Jolla Handicap on Maltese Falcon.

In the La Jolla Handicap, Hernandez charged the favored Maltese Falcon along the rail and past Justin’s Legacy then Agency in the stretch with Umberto Rispoli also rallying late with Panic Alarm to finish second. “I was really patient with him,” Hernandez said of Maltese Falcon, who is trained by Leonard Powell. “Leonard told me this horse had a really good kick at the end.

“I didn’t give Juan any special instructions,” said Powell. “He’s a top-class jockey. He watched the videos. Juan put him in a good spot in the pocket. The main thing was he waited for the opening. The opening did happen and the horse was good enough.”
