Netflix's One Piece Hints At What Luffy's Devil Fruit REALLY Is During Netflix's One Piece flashbacks, Shanks is shown unloading his ship at Windmill Village. Carrying the Devil Fruit box, he warns Lucky Roux, "Easy with this Roux, it's worth more than the rest of the loot put together." In One Piece episode 2, Luffy then reinforces this, telling Makino, "The Gum Gum Fruit is worth more than all of Shanks' treasure... so that makes me worth more.
Luffy then echoing Shanks' sentiments, as well as proclaiming his own importance due to eating the Devil Fruit, further underlines how this moment of dialogue is intended to carry a deeper meaning. This live-action One Piece line is more than just a passing remark from Shanks - it's a firm belief Luffy still holds.
Judging by Shanks' reaction hjen witnessing Luffy stretch for the first time, however, it seems more likely that he knew the Gum Gum Fruit was secretly the mythical Nika fruit, but did not actually intend the youngster to eat it. Shanks' "what have you done?" response in Netflix's live-action show is not the reply of a man whose grand plan is proceeding smoothly.
