Posted: Aug. 26, 2024 3:00PMMounties say one person is dead following a single-vehicle crash along the Gold River Highway outside Campbell River, where a vehicle was driven off the road, down an embankment and into a body of water.
When officers arrived on scene early Sunday morning, the driver, who’s believed to be the only person involved in the collision, was dead and the vehicle was fully submerged in water, according to RCMP. Police say a driver passing through the area noticed highway barriers were out of place and notified authorities around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
“Upon further investigation a vehicle was located fully submerged in water. Tragically, one person did not survive. There is no indication that anyone else was involved in the crash,” said RCMP in a release. An RCMP spokesperson tells CHEK News the vehicle was estimated to be about 20 feet underwater, making for a difficult recovery for crews.shows the collision happened at Upper Campbell Lake, about 20 kilometres west of Campbell River. Around 2:10 p.m. Monday, it warned commuters to expect “major delays” in the area and to watch for traffic control crews.Another traffic update is expected at 4 p.m.
