Pregnant right whales migrate from the waters off Nova Scotia and New England to give birth in the warmer waters off the coast of Florida and Georgia.

The whales are critically endangered with a population estimated by scientists with the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium at 409, down from more than 450 in 2016.were sighted in the Southeast. The births were an improvement over the previous season when no calves were reported but a huge drop from the 20 or more whales born each season between 2005 and 2010.

However, scientists’ cautious optimism was quickly eclipsed by the 10 whale deaths reported over the summer, nine in Canada and one in the United States. The dead whales included several breeding females. The whales face many threats, including changes to their feeding areas as a result of warming ocean temperatures, busy shipping lanes and commercial seafood harvesting gear.
