Scientists have condemned the sale of the ancient specimens to private collectors.
A massive tyrannosaur skull—one of the best and most complete ever discovered—is estimated to sell for as much as $20 million at auction next month, as the market for dinosaur bones remains hot despite controversy around the sale of the ancient specimens.... [+]The skull, nicknamed “Maximus,” is believed to be 76 million years old, according to auction house Sotheby’s, stands about 6 foot 7 and weighs more than 200 pounds mounted on a pedestal.
The skull is in remarkable condition, with all the tooth-bearing jaw elements preserved along with most of the external bones on each side of the skull, which is “extremely rare” for a specimen of its kind, Sotheby’s said. The skull was excavated from private land that makes up a section of the Hell Creek Formation in South Carolina, which has yielded more tyrannosaur fossils than anywhere else on Earth, according to Sotheby’s.
The dig site where Maximus’ skull was discovered had been weathered over millions of years, Sotheby’s said, and the skull was the only part of the skeleton that had not been destroyed by erosion.
