Australian employers have been told to upskill their workers after new research found one in five workers were deemed “not fully proficient” in their roles.

Bosses think one in five workers are “not fully proficient” in their job, a new survey found, prompting calls for better training and more technology to boost sluggish productivity.

“With recruitment difficulties persisting, some employers reporting that some of their employees are not proficient in their roles and Australia’s productivity falling short of many of its OECD competitors, now is the time to invest in workplace training and the broader set of HR practices that boost organisational performance,” AHRI chief executive Sarah McCann-Bartlett said.

This compared to 46 per cent for flexible working arrangements, 36 per cent for performance-related pay and 33 per cent for on-the-job training.
