SINGAPORE: One person was found dead and two were taken to hospital with burns after a fire broke out in Jurong.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to the fire in Jalan Buroh at 5.10pm yesterday. A total of 35 emergency vehicles and 120 firefighters were deployed to the scene.

The fire involved hundreds of highly flammable liquified petroleum gas cylinders of various sizes in an LPG facility about the size of two football fields and spread rapidly, SCDF said in a Facebook post. “Firefighters faced intense heat amidst exploding LPG cylinders while preventing the fire from spreading to larger LPG storage tanks nearby,” the post added.Col Anthony Toh, commander of the 4th SCDF Division, said it was the largest fire involving LPG that SCDF had attended to. The fire was brought under control at 7.30pm.

A person was found and pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic. Two workers suffered burns and were taken to Singapore General Hospital. LPG cylinders pose an explosion hazard when subjected to high temperatures, said SCDF, adding that it was investigating the cause of the fire. She took videos of the area from which the sounds were heard, which showed thick smoke coming from a building in the distance. There was also a strong burning smell, she said. — The Straits Times/Asia News Network
