Firefighters rushed the scene about 3 a.m.
MARTINEZ — A person died early Wednesday after a two-alarm fire at two-story apartment building, fire officials said.
Fire crews also rescued a person from the blaze, according to Capt. George Laing of the Contra Costa Fire Protection District. That person was checked by medics and was expected to be OK. The identity of the person killed will be released by Contra Costa County Coroner’s staff after it is confirmed and their next of kin are notified.
Firefighters rushed to Foster Street at about 3 a.m. Crews called for a second alarm, because of the vicinity of other buildings and because of the possibility that people needed to be rescued, Laing said. Heavy smoke came from the building, but there was little heat reported, Laing said. Such conditions can occur when a fire begins to smolder and build heavy smoke but there is no heat source to feed the spread of flames.
