This marks the fourth year that One Church in Gahanna seeks to raise community donations to provide $25 gift cards to Ohio teens in foster care.

in Gahanna for three short months in 2019 when the congregation set out to raise donations in order to provide gift cards to Franklin County teenagers in foster care. After making her own donations, she sought donations from friends and family willing to contribute either gift cards themselves, or the money that would allow her to go out and purchase them.

In the inaugural drive, One Church surpassed its expectations, raising enough donations to provide every one of the 775 Franklin County teenagers in foster care that year with three $25 gift cards each, said Dionna Carter, the church’s director of outreach.St. Vincent Family Services plans $3 million renovation to youth residential care center

As the drive enters its fourth year, Carter said One Church has raised a total of $635,000 worth of gift cards for more than 10,000 teenagers. The premise for the gift card drive came about after leaders at One Church approached Franklin County Children Services in 2019 to ask what sort of charitable endeavor they could undertake that would be the most beneficial to the youth they serve, Carter said. What they heard, Carter said, is that while toy drives are common for younger children in need around Christmas, teenagers are too often overlooked.

The youth in foster care often face a harsh reality that they may be alone for the holidays, and that Christmas presents from loved ones may be few and far between. Teenagers in foster care in Franklin County are able to list their top three choices for a gift card to ensure the best chance of receiving one to a place where they like to shop, Kennison said.

Mercedes earned the Constructors’ Championship (for best overall team performance) every year from 2014 through 2021, and over that time frame it won nearly 70% of the Grand Prix races it competed in. To understand what made that possible, Harvard Business School’s Anita Elberse spent time with the team in 2021, conducting interviews and watching what went on behind the scenes before, during, and after races. She found that Wolff shapes the culture at Mercedes to a remarkable degree. Elberse’s takeaway? What you say and do as a leader has a surprisingly powerful effect on the organization you run. In this article, drawing on her observations of Wolff’s management style and practices, Elberse presents six lessons that can help any leader cultivate a winning team: (1) Set the highest standards for everyone; (2) put people front and center; (3) analyze mistakes continually—even when winning; (4) foster an open, no-blame culture; (5) trust superstars but maintain authority; and (6) relentlessly battle complacency.
