A year ago, Leneace Pope and Dion Hines had moved into new apartments. Today, they are back on the streets — their situation illustrating the challenges Los Angeles faces not just in getting people into housing, but in keeping them there.
with air conditioning and heating, dishwashers and bathtubs and, after years of homelessness, hot water at the turn of a faucet.
But there are those who cannot make it. They are a small percentage who demonstrate just how elusive a solution can be. Outreach workers are continuing to help Niecy and Dion. With their documentation still in order, they should be easy to house, said Ericka Battaglia, a program manager.Leneace Pope organizes her belongings inside a tent in Los Angeles. “I’m tired of being out here,” she says.
He doesn’t have much to do with Niecy and Dion, but he misses Big Mama and Horace, who once lived in tents across the street and helped keep order. “Los,” 39, has put himself in charge but doesn’t want to give his name. He says he once lived in Pico Rivera and spent time in the Rio Hondo wash before coming downtown.
A clothing designer, Naked Zebra, has renovated a derelict building on whose sidewalk Dion had once pitched his tent.
