The largest and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil was discovered in South Dakota on this day in history, August 12, 1990. The fossil was dubbed 'Sue' after the woman who discovered it.

"Sue is the most celebrated representative of T. rex and arguably the most famous fossil in the world," said The Field Museum's website.

Sue, the largest and most complete T. rex fossil ever discovered, was found in South Dakota on this day in history. As Sue is a nearly complete specimen, scientists made copies of the skeleton for research and display purposes, noted the museum. One of the copies, dubbed"Dino-Sue," is on display at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Orlando, Florida, said Walt Disney World's website.

Sue was purchased by the Field Museum in 1998, after what the museum described as a"five-year custody battle" among three different parties.
