‘On The Record’ Sundance Premiere: Drew Dixon, Sil Lai Abrams Defend Directors Kirby Dick & Amy Ziering Amid Oprah Winfrey Pushback
You would think it was a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival with multiple standing ovations for Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s documentary about the black women who stood up and spoke out against music mogul Russell Simmons, accusing him of sexual assault.
“I just want to stress that this was a collaborative effort from day 1 with all the people involved. And any representation that that wasn’t the case is not an accurate representation of this narrative, of this story,” added Sil Lai Abrams, a former model who claims she was raped by Simmons in 1994.
AppleTV+ and Winfrey’s loss will be another distributor’s gain here as buyers from Focus Features, Roadside Attractions, Amazon, CNN Films, IFC, Showtime, HBO Max and Netflix stormed the MARC to get a look at what is the fest’s hottest title. It wouldn’t be shocking to see The Hunting Ground Winfrey said that she still believed Dixon, but was troubled by “inconsistencies in her account that the film had not adequately addressed.”
