Financially savvy folks will recognize these terms as staples of microeconomic theory. Many economists would describe “opportunity cost” as the connection between scarcity and choice – when an individual or institution makes any decision between mutually exclusive options, they sacrifice any potential benefits from alternative decisions they could have made instead.
Meanwhile, this is all within a framework where decisions have a cascading effect on others in the future. Every move made or not made carries inherent opportunity cost. They’re highly cognizant of the fact that many of their moves carry higher opportunity cost than other franchises. The Lakers have hilariously mismanaged virtually every element of their roster construction over the last half-decade, but could easily end up with a star-studded haul this summer to supplement LeBron James just by virtue of history and location; Lindsey and staff are well aware the Jazz possess no such luxury. They have limited chances to get it right.
This isn’t just a Warriors thing, either. Lindsey and Co. have had this 2019 offseason highlighted as a pivotal one for multiple years, for reasons both internal and external. They’ve specifically structured contracts in previous offseasons to leave flexibility open this summer, one where a huge percentage of the league can hit the market.
