On her 50th birthday, TV icon MaraBrockAkil opens up about the beauty lessons she's learned over the years
I also drink a lot of water and green tea daily. I also devour avocados. But my best beauty secret is SLEEP. I’ve been getting my Zs for years. More recently, I have been cutting out people, places and things that are toxic to my life and depleting of my time. I think that regimen helps my pores stay open and youthful too!I discovered and fell in love with. I love his approach and philosophy to embracing our natural curls and thus our natural self.
Try and give yourself permission to change your mind. I find that a lot of times we think once we decide to do something we have to commit forever—certainly to raising your children, but not to your hair color. We need to give ourselves more permission to play, try and change our minds, not just with our hair, but with our lives.
When I’m creating, I’m more concerned about getting the details of our humanity right. If you get a chance at getting the truth right, you get a real swing at being iconic. Thankfully, the fight for the truth of black girl authenticity [like the one I put up for Tracee to wear her hair natural on the show] didn’t just serve us twenty years ago— by winning that battle, black girls got to see that all of their hairstyles were pretty, from weaves to natural hair.
Looking back, I wish I had embraced more freely my body and my looks. I downplayed my looks because I wanted to be known for my brains and my heart. I regret that I wore the long t-shirt over my high school bikini, I hate that I wore a conservative bikini in my twenties with the corresponding wrap well into my thirties, and I hate that I hid my body post children because of my stretch marks. Now that I’m 50 and still have a beautiful, strong healthy body, I won’t be hiding anymore.
