We asked each of the 12 Los Angeles mayoral candidate to give us their take on how they think the city is doing, what they think needs to happen, and what gives them hope for Los Angeles. We received responses from 10 of the candidates. “We have an opportunity to change the direction of L.A. by coming together to end rampant inequality, treat and house the homeless, and invest in communities to head off crime before it happens,” she said., a city councilman, praised Mayor Eric Garcetti for the “impressive achievements” he highlighted this week in his state of the city address, but he said that the city is “at a difficult moment.”

“It’s hurting, and it’s heartbreaking,” he said. Caruso has pointed to homelessness, crime and corruption at Los Angeles City Hall as problems that need urgent responses. In order to end street homelessness, Caruso wants to create 30,000 shelter beds in a year, restrict sleeping in public areas and stop new encampments from forming.

He sees a “confluence of crises” in Los Angeles that demands a good leader. And he pointed to the “doer” mentality displayed by the city’s “working people” which gives him hope that Angelenos can overcome these challenges., the current Los Angeles City Attorney, said, “The city is in crisis.” “I think that Los Angeles can and should be the greatest city in America,” he said. “The resources we possess, and our tapestry of people and industry and diversity are unparalleled. The fact that this city is a walking disaster zone is a complete and total failure of leadership.”

But he said that there is hope, because Angelenos are compassionate toward “fellow human beings living on the street.” He says the city’s residents agree much more than they disagree., an education technology founder, said that although Los Angeles is a vibrant place, it’s on a downward slide, the symptoms of which are its unequal wealth and its increase in crime.
