The Washoe Tribe 'are important members of our community, past, present and future.'
Olympic Valley continues to shed a racist slur that was in the names of businesses, roads and geographical places for decades. Most recently, Placer County renamed three roads that formerly contained the racist slur., finally removing the racist and misogynist slur that had been in its name for more than 70 years, the most obvious changes were swift: A new logo was introduced, all signs greeting skiers replaced, uniforms were updated.
Squaw Peak Road, which leads behind the tram building at the far end of the valley toward a small cluster of condos and townhomes, will be Shirley Canyon Road. And Squaw Peak Way will be Marmot Way. “Lake Tahoe is our heart and soul of the Washoe Land,” said Darrel Cruz, director of historic preservation for the Washoe Tribe, at a lecture at Palisades Tahoe last summer. Da Ow is the Washoe word for lake. There are hundreds of alpine lakes in Washoe ancestral land, but when the Washoe say Da Ow, they mean Lake Tahoe. “It’s the center of the universe for the Washoe people. Both geographically, physically, spiritually, everything around our lives circles around Da Ow.
As of Thursday morning, the last road signs on Highway 89 carrying the slur still stand, but county staff is in the process of creating new signage to replace the old.
