Krasnodar authorities in southern Russia declared a state of emergency following an oil spill that has contaminated coastal areas for 10 days after two old oil tankers were damaged by a storm. The incident on December 15th saw one tanker split in two and another run aground. The oil spill has now spread across sandy beaches around Anapa, a popular resort town, and is affecting marine life including birds, dolphins, and porpoises. Over 10,000 people are reported to be working to clean up the pollution. Governor of Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratiev, said the emergency declaration was made because oil was still contaminating beaches in Anapa and Temryuk. The head of the crisis center said that the bow section of one of the tankers, Volgoneft-239, had been found on the seabed and divers will inspect it for potential oil leaks as soon as weather permits.
