Ohio State continued to put things on film offensively. But none of it was about the opponent in front of them.
Last season Ohio State had plays that were best described as “Jaxon Plays” designed with Jaxon Smith-Njigba in mind. But he got hurt against Notre Dame and was never right again. Those plays were put on the back burner for most of the season until Xavier Johnson emerged as a quality option to run them as a versatile former walk-on who had spent time in both the running back and wide receiver rooms.
Now those “Jaxon Plays” are “Xavier Plays” coming in the form of jet sweeps, pop passes and even using him as a running back out of the backfield. It also meant a new set featuring tight ends Joe Royer, Gee Scott Jr. and Cade Stover spread out wide, Harrison on the other side and Johnson catching a swing pass out of the backfield.Youngstown State threw the ball more often than Indiana allowing for OSU’s defense to show off some different looks as well.
The Buckeyes had a dime 3-2-6 look with J.T. Tuimolau, Mike Hall and Caden Curry as the defensive line; Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg as the linebackers; Denzel Burke, Davison Igbinosun and Jordan Hancock as the cornerbacks; and Lathan Ransom, Ja’Had Carter and Sonny Styles as the safeties. It’s quite clear that Kyle McCord is Ohio State’s starting quarterback given how he and Devin Brown were used and how often they were used.
