Ohio State Fair officials offered a preview of changes into ride safety at a press conference held Monday morning at the Ohio Expo Center.
Five years after an amusement-ride accident at the Ohio State Fair led to the deaths of two Columbus residents, the fair is preparing to open for the first time under improved safety requirements.
The law bears the name of Tyler Jarrell, 18, of West Columbus, who was killed during the 2017 Ohio State Fair when one of the rusted gondolas broke off the Fire Ball ride — a carnival ride that swings in a circle — and crashed to the ground. A second victim, Jennifer Lambert, 19, of Columbus later died of liver failure after sustaining a traumatic brain injury in the incident.
Officials have been performing inspections on the approximately 65 rides on site since Wednesday, Miran said. "When we have something awful happen, that's usually the only way we get something positive," she said."And that's what happened with this. We didn't realize all of the areas of potential learning that were there for maintaining our safety here in the state."
