Under HB 8, schools need to create policies allowing parents to review instructional materials involving sexually explicit content and if parents request, teachers would have to provide alternate instruction that does not include sexually explicit content.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A bill in the Ohio House would require teachers to notify parents about sexually explicit instruction, as well as inform parents of children’s physical and mental health services received at school in what the bill describes as a “Parents Bill of Rights.
HB 8 would also require schools to have policies to notify parents of a student’s change in services or monitoring of the physical or mental health. “This bill does not grant parents any authority that they do not already have, but rather statutorily protects their ability to direct the upbringing, education, health care, and mental health of their minor child,” Carruthers said in March testimony before the committee.
