Republicans on the Ohio Redistricting Commission asked the state supreme court to issue a ruling on their newly drawn legislative districts by the middle of February – or potentially stay any decision until after the 2022 general election.

The districts must be finalized around Feb. 11 so county boards can begin programming their voter registration systems. The commission said there is precedent for letting maps stand while they are being challenged in court, as was the case in 2012. “The lack of collaboration doomed the Commission’s map,” she said. “Had improvements been allowed to the proposed maps, they could have satisfied this Court’s decision. But the Republican Commissioners voted for their map without a single amendment.”
