A runner spotted around a half-dozen dead woodchucks that 'weren't there' less than an hour earlier.
A half-dozen or so dead groundhogs turned up suddenly Monday evening along the walking/running path in Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park.When he began his nightly run of about 3 miles, he saw just one dead woodchuck along the path. But as he completed the return leg of his run along the same route, he noticed several additional animals “that weren’t there before” were now lying dead along the path in the half-mile stretch between Forster and Clinton streets.
Dustin Stoner, information and education supervisor in the commission’s southeast region, confirmed that the commission is investigating the reports. While many on Facebook speculated about the potential cause of death, ranging from herbicide or pesticide poisoning to some sort of predator, officials investigating the event have not determined any cause.Matt Maisel, director of communications for the city, said in an email response that the dead groundhogs “were picked up by Animal Control. However, the cause of death is still unknown. We can say with certainty it was not caused by a chemical used by the city in plant spraying.
