The pygmy zebra octopus shares more than a name with the striped African equine. A new study suggests that like zebras, the dark stripes marking the tiny cephalopods native to the Pacific Coast of the Americas are unique to each individual—and possibly help the creatures identify one another.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, took weekly photographs of 25 newborn pygmy zebra octopuses reared in the lab, then traced each one’s stripe-and-dot pattern using Adobe Illustrator. The hatchlings began to display unique patterns as early as their fifth day of life, and. It’s possible pygmy zebra octopuses recognize one another by these unique stripes, they note.
