We saw record-breaking heat in the atmosphere and oceans in 2023, with some of the hottest temperatures reported.

Global ocean temperatures have hit new highs in 2024 as the earth is pushed to a major tipping point on both sides of the equator

NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch has now added three additional levels to the program so that they can accurately communicate and classify the impact on global coral reefs.Warming oceans around Australia and the Atlantic are bound to have a profound impact, hampering crucial circulation drivers and killing coral, writes Bradlyn Oakes. But most of the ocean area along the east coast of Australia was at warning level or above, including a huge area of the Queensland coast and the Great Barrier Reef. Most of the Coral Sea and Tasman Sea are at watch level or higher. The Great Barrier Reef has also been recording high heat and reaching bleaching thresholds. And this has happened about a month earlier than when we would normally see the peak.

Professor Terry Hughes is the Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University wrote on Twitter on March 3: “Accumulated heat stress is still rising rapidly throughout the #GreatBarrierReef. The central and northern regions have caught up with the south after a cooler start to summer. 7th mass coral bleaching event since 1998 is well underway, 5th in just 8 years.

There are so many other factors to take into consideration, but increased energy in the ocean will play a part this year and could make the season more active. It is one of the tipping points of the climate system and if we see it collapse there will be large impacts that are greater than anything we’ve seen before. There are typically two peaks in the year when it comes to sea surface temperatures. This is when the heating from the southern hemisphere summer peaks.Which means the global ocean temperatures are higher.
